Our Mission

Our mission is to achieve equity, political rights, and social inclusion by advancing policies and practices that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education, and economic security of Black people and all persons of color.

Our history

The Statesville Branch NAACP #5454 was officially chartered on July 9, 1934, by T. V. Mangum and Dr. Zachary Dockery during a time when African Americans in Iredell County faced widespread segregation and limited access to civil and human rights. From its earliest years, the branch worked to confront discrimination in education, employment, housing, voting rights, and the justice system through organized advocacy and nonviolent action.

Throughout its history, the branch has been sustained by strong leadership and a deep commitment to justice, equality, and community empowerment. Dedicated presidents and officers have guided the organization through decades of social and political change, addressing issues related to education equity, voting rights, economic justice, health equity, and civic engagement.

The Statesville Branch NAACP has long collaborated with faith leaders, educators, community organizations, and allies to strengthen its advocacy and respond to the evolving needs of the community. The branch has also played a vital role in voter education and civic participation, helping to ensure that African American voices are heard in public decision-making.

Over the years, the branch has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to deserving students and continues to uphold its mission of advancing equity, protecting civil rights, and building a more just and inclusive community.
